It’s a wondrous thing to live in such close proximity to so many people, because the inevitable potential for eavesdropping is high. 😊 As I sat in my favorite neighborhood coffee shop a few days ago, I couldn’t help overhearing a conversation between a man and woman who appeared to be on a first date. Their conversation inevitably turned to the topic of their religious and/or spiritual beliefs . . . given this is a favorite exploration of mine, I set aside my book in favor of what was being said . . .
The gentleman was adamant about his atheism and the impossibility of a higher power. His conclusion was that life was arbitrary and we make of it what we can. The lady, on the other hand, was more open. She wasn’t resigned to wholehearted faith without some kind of sign that her belief was justified. She also wasn’t willing to give up on the idea of a higher power just because she had yet to receive said sign.
