It’s been said that trauma transforms. Experience has taught me this is absolutely true at an unconscious level. When we – as children – initially struggle through emotional hardships, we form unconscious responses that create patterns and habits that help us cope, but also create limitations both in how much we can grow and how well we can know ourselves. We can easily persist in these patterns and habits for the rest of our lives, unless and until, we chafe (are triggered by . . . “triggered” is not my preference, despite its popular usage) against their limitations.
The majority of human beings however, will persist in their patterns and habits, despite the chafing. They often cannot make the connection between early childhood traumas and the patterns that keep breaking down their closest relationships, the fear that keeps stopping them from pursuing the next big opportunity, or choices that would bring more joy into their lives, for example. There is a certain amount of resignation…
