I loathe cheap shit. I know, not very spiritual to loathe anything. Except perhaps cheap shit, because it’s a window into our systemic crises. As a local New Yorker, I avoid Times Square as if my life depended upon it . . . until I go to the theater. Last night, as I was walking home after a performance at the Belasco Theater, I was obligated to walk through Times Square. It’s impossible not to notice the endless souvenir shops selling cheap NYC trinkets to tourists. I get the desire to commemorate the thrill of a trip to New York City, after all, I was a tourist in this city many times before I lived here. But, Times Square is a temple to capitalism and cheap shit is its trophy. (I apologize to the sensitive readers who find my use of foul language offensive, but it’s the linguistic representation of a lack of quality and intention and hence, appropriate in the context.)
