Moving through life mindfully is a blessing . . . until it’s not. We often think that mindfulness is an end in and of itself; once we’ve figured out how to be present and aware, surely we’ll move through life with mastery, right?! The opposite can often be true, especially as we’re learning to be mindful. If mindfulness is one of multiple practices we’re utilizing to fulfill intentions to grow, it can actually be practiced with less mindful responses than we’re striving for due to practice fatigue . . . too much of a good thing can often overwhelm or diminish our intentions.
What happens so often as we move into mindfulness initially, is a downward spiral that can leave us feeling worse about our practice and ourselves. Inner work is always self-inquiry, which leaves us vulnerable and necessitates spaciousness to grapple with and integrate hard truths. As we bolster our awareness of what’s happening in the present, we can easily move into judgment, resistance, and grasping.
